Abstract – Online social spaces are typically designed in ways that severely limit the capacity for users, workers, and other direct stakeholders to self-govern. What if such spaces were designed differently? This talk diagnoses the current limits and explores frameworks for thinking about the future of online governance design for a more deeply accountable digital spaces. Additional information – Nathan Schneider is professor of media studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he directs the Media Enterprise Design Lab and teaches and learns from their students. He has written a book each on cooperative enterprise, the Occupy movement, and God, and has co-edited one about the Internet.
