Lecture title
The Felt Sense as a Design Material: The Body as a Source of Tacit Knowledge in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI).

Abstract We make sense of the world through our bodies, and it’s through them that we articulate meaning. Following this premise, this talk draws on a decade of research that takes our felt sense seriously as both a site of inquiry and a design material, from artefacts for bodily self-reflection and body-centric methods for articulating tacit and aesthetic experience to poetry and large language models. Along the way, I will discuss methodological contributions and the tensions that arise when somaesthetic design intersects with other design traditions, including AI. Central to this trajectory is a recurring question: how do we design for what the body already knows, even before such knowledge is articulated? In exploring this, my most recent work, which bridges somatic practices and LLMs, proposes strategies centred on designing for body-centric temporalities and the diverse manifestations of human language expression. This approach reclaims trust by anchoring our interactions in bodily knowing, opening the door for less data-centric approaches to designing for reflection.
