Lecture title
Lab Encounter with the Humanities Data Lab (HUMAL).
Abstract The Humanities Data Lab (HUMAL) is part of the Estonian Research and Cultural Data Infrastructure (ETKAD). The lab explores how data-intensive humanities research can become more findable, understandable and reusable. At the centre of HUMAL is the idea of the research workflow as a reusable research object. Research outputs often do not capture the full research process behind them, as data may be published in one place, code in another, while methodological decisions and the choice of tools often remain difficult for other researchers to understand, discover or reconstruct. HUMAL is experimenting with ways of making the research process more visible and reusable without creating an unreasonable documentation burden for researchers. During the lab encounter, we will introduce the lab’s activities and community, discuss why research processes and workflows need better documentation, present plans for a registry of datasets and workflows, and outline the emerging technical infrastructure.
